An ejector pump is required if a plumbing fixture is located underneath your main sewer line level. Ejection pumps are designed to raise effluent so that it can flow correctly down and out. They function by sucking water from the toilet or other pipework into a holding tank, which is then forced through pipes and out of the house by the suction caused by air pressure. 

The pump-up ejector system is intended for gravity-fed systems with valves positioned below the main sewage line’s level. Because pressurized sewage lines do not rely on pressure to carry waste away from them, this technique does not work in residences with compressed sewage lines.

What Is a Sewage Ejector Pump?

A sewage ejector pump works in the same way as a groundwater sump pump. However, waste/sewage pulls up into the main sewer lines or septic tank instead of rainwater seepage pushing it out of the house. Unless there is no way to remove wastewater from a region, sewage ejector devices are utilized. This includes properties that do not connect to municipal sewers or are located on high ground where gravity-fed systems are ineffective.

Ejector pumps are typically found in homes with basement bathrooms or laundry rooms. Ejector pumps are often employed when the municipal sewer lines leading to the street are taller than the fixture. They work by pumping liquids and sediments into the sewer pipe, allowing it to flow freely. Ejector pumps are also commonly used in septic drain fields, particularly in rural areas where the septic drainage field or holding tank is more profound than the basement drainage pipes.

Sewage ejector pumps are designed to be installed in a sump basin sunk into the earth below grade. For a medium-sized home, this sump basin collects and retains around 30 gallons of waste. The drain lines from different fixtures in the basement area slope down into the side of the sump basin.

When the volume of wastewater in the sump basin reaches a specific height, the sewage ejector pump is started up by a moveable float. The effluent is then revved up to your sewer or septic line from the basin. When this level drops, your water pressure drops as well, which means no more clogged drains!

System Requirements

Ejector pumps are used to pump wastewater out of a septic tank’s sump basin. They add up and through the roof or are connected to an existing vent (soil) stack. The sewage ejector pump’s outlet pipe is usually 2 inches in diameter, related to the 3-inch main sewer line. 

There is always a check valve between the pump point of discharge and the junction with the main sewer line to ensure nothing leaks back into it after the wastewater has been pushed out. Only use slightly elevated parts when installing an ejector pump to ensure your safety and peace of mind.
